I greatly appreciate the voice of Pastor John Piper as a clear advocate for the crushing implications of the gospel against the evils of racism. Today, on MLK Jr. day, I applaud his decision to give away PDF copies of his latest book on this topic. I have not yet read it, but I will be following the link in this post to download it and will seek to examine my own heart in relation to this insidious sin. Will you join me?
I have always appreciated pastor Piper's strong stand against racism, but more than that, I've appreciated the reason for his stance. Recently, I ran across the following quote from Piper: "We love Christ-exalting ethnic diversity not because it's a cool social issue, but because it's a costly blood issue. Rev 5:9"
ReplyDeleteIndeed, if Christ has redeemed with His blood a people from every tribe, tongue, people and nation, what excuse do we have to show contempt? I haven't read the book yet either, but I will endeavor to push it to the front of the list.
Great thoughts here, Roy. I love the quote. Hopefully some of the renewed evangelical focus on this issue is not just a fad, the "cool social issue" flavor of the month. Piper says it best- this is a "costly blood issue," one which we aught to approach with open Bibles, repentant hearts, and real commitment.
